Entering Horses into Classes on OMHPS (2023)

Last piece of the OMHPS series!

How to enter a horse in a class from their profile page. I am not covering from the show or home page, because that is easy enough to figure out on your own. :) This is a short one.

Go to your horse's profile page.

Scroll down, past these things:

And hit this little button, "See Classes".

You should go to a page like this:

It may or may not have that little banner at the bottom. Go and click on the dropdown on the far left side, under the horse's image (mine says Dreams of Spring 2). This little thing pops up when you click on it. :)

I am entering Morgenstern into Equiden's Celebration Show. I am going to click on her show, and then hit the little blue search icon again.

A bunch of little banners will show up that list class names and qualifications. Morgenstern is an American WB, so I will find the class with that breed listed.

I will click enter. This pops up, and gives you an opportunity to review the model and double check your class selection.

Everything looks good to me, so I hit "Enter" at the bottom right. Yay! It went through. It now says "entered".

I am going to return to the horse's profile (I use the short-cut at the top of the page). Then I will scroll down until I get to the section toward the bottom of the profile page that says "Entries". This shows all of the classes the horse is competing in. The class I just entered is there, so everything did go through perfectly. There is a "Retract" button on the side, so if you did something wrong, or no longer want the horse to compete in that class, you can click that. :)

Making a Horse Profile on OMHPS (2023)

 As promised, here's a continuation of the OMHPS series. All directions are based off of how it looks on my Acer laptop, I have no idea what it looks like for you. It should be similar though! :)

Making a Horse Profile:

Step 1. Take a photo (or two) of your model.

Step 2. Open and log into OMHPS. Click the "My Horses" tab at the top right.

Step 3. Click the "Add Horse" button on the far left top of your "My Horses" page.

You should see this page:

Step 4. Start filling those blanks in. If your horse is a purebred, ignore the crossbreeds drop down. Try to fill in all the fields especially make and size. You upload your photos at the bottom and you can use the drop-down to select what privacy setting you desire. Watermark gives your images a watermark all over, private makes them invisible to other users, and public leaves it just as you see it. Regardless of what you select, judges will always see your original image.

Don't hit create yet!!

Step 5: Once you have filled out this page, scroll to the top and hit the next tab: references. This is optional, but if you have a rare breed you may want to link over to it's breed website, or to a picture of it. I linked to the American WB registry. (Don't worry, you won't lose your previous page of work).

Step 6. Workmanship next! On that tab bar you want to switch over to workmanship. Here you can fill out your color and pattern. If your horse is solid, just use the solid option in the pattern dropdown. You can hit the "use main horse image box" too. The pic won't appear yet, but it will once you hit create (but don't hit create yet!).

Step 7. Last one! Collectability. You can fill in your horse's release info here, like what years he was made, and what type of run it was. You can also choose the piece count. (Tip #1: Most regular run models have piece counts of 5000+. Tip #2 IDYB is your friend for this tab.) 

Step 8. Technically, you could go ahead and hit create horse now (bottom left) but I always like to take one last check over my first page again.

Step 9. Create horse!! Most fun. Press the button, pass the reCAPTCHA, and wait a couple seconds. The next page should look like this:

Congrats! Your horse is now on OMHPS. :) Tomorrow I will cover entering your horse in shows.

A Short Rundown of How OMHPS Works (2023)

Yesterday I saw some questions in the comments about how to show on OMHPS. This is just a quick drive-by of the basics. Please remember, things are subject to change, and the website may not be identical later down the road (hence why I tacked the year down in the title). I love OMHPS, and use it heavily. I hope all of you join too!

What is OMHPS?

OMHPS (Online Model Horse Photo Shows) is a platform for hosting and showing phot shows. It holds all of your photos and information so you never have to upload twice. It is a trillion times easier than PonyBytes!

Is OMHPS free?

Yep. Unless you want the premium membership which allows you to have 2500 models (vs the 250 on a free membership) use reference pics, upload better pics to the website, removes the ads, and several other perks. Premium is $20 a year. I don't have premium, you really don't need it unless you are doing heavy, serious competitions. It does help them with website upkeep, so I know they appreciate every member!

Is entering shows free?

Depends. With the exception of the official OMHPS shows every other month, the shows are hosted by the users. Whoever is hosting gets to decide whether or not they charge a fee. Some do, some don't. If they do, you have to email them and pay a PayPal fee of $3-15 (estimating roughly here). If they do not charge a fee to enter, then you can just go ahead and start entering horses. No fee for free shows. Just pick around through the show descriptions until you find a free one.

Are the OMHPS shows free?

Yes, except for the occasional ones that are only for Premium members. The Birthday show is free for all. :)

Do I need special equipment?

Not to start! Just a basic camera, a model horse, and a place to stand it. As you progress in showing, you may wish to purchase better equipment to upgrade your photos, but it is never required for halter showing. For performance, you will need tack, possibly a doll, maybe props, and a background (usually). Scene is prop heavy typically, but you don't have to enter scene or halter unless you want to and have the stuff for it.

How do I go about doing this thing?

Equiden's Celebration Show

Exciting news! Equiden of Equiden's Plastic Ponies has just celebrated her one year anniversary for the opening of her blog, and she recently passed some milestones in viewership. In honor of this occasion, she is hosting a free show on OMHPS. You can see it here.

This show is incredible. It has three divisions, twenty-eight sections, and two hundred eighteen classes. The class list is fantastic and super inclusive of all those weirdling breeds.

The divisions are Fun Division, OF Large, and OF Small. Equiden is judging the Fun Division, I am judging OF Large, and Naomi (some of you may know her discord name Naomithewolf#2563) is judging OF Small.

If you are not on OMHPS, I highly recommend you make a (free!) account and start showing. There are plenty of free shows running this month. I hope to see you all at Equiden's Celebration show! :)

Happy Second Birthday OMHPS

OMHPS (Online Model Horse Photo Shows) is celebrating their second year out of beta this month. In the spirit of things, they have hosted a new birthday themed photo show. I was so so so excited when I saw this! Fun shows/scene classes are my very favorite thing, I had so many ideas chasing each other around in my head. I finally settled on a small stall decorated for a party, with a few animals and a foal.

This is how it turned out:

Overall, I'm really happy with it. It took me two weeks to set everything up, as I made a bunch of the props, had to paint the barn (it still needs another coat or two XD) and had all the chaos going on. I finished it three or four days ago, just in time to get hit with a big snowstorm that prevented any hope of photos before this afternoon (there is still snow on the ground, but none blowing onto the porch and the sun is shining clear).

Here are some close-ups of the details:

The barn itself has a funny story behind it. I had gone to the salon with a family member to get our hair done. While we were there, our beautician gave us a couple tickets for a duck race in our town. We kinda - ---- wait a second. I better explain what a duck race is before I move on. In my town, we hold an annual rubber duck race in our park's pond. Two guys paddle out in a tiny canoe and dump one or two totes of rubber ducks (with numbers written in sharpie on their bellies) out in the middle of the pond. The first ducky to go over the miniature waterfall at the end of the pond wins. The person who has the ticket with the winning ducky's number gets $200. All clear? Ok. So we got these tickets and we were both just kinda chuckling to ourselves like "what are we supposed to do with these? Like we'd ever win". Just joking, I made my family member promise to buy me the Breyer Hilltop Stable if she won, and I promised to buy her something if I got lucky. The next weekend, we both attended the race. We didn't bring our tickets, because, well, what are the odds?? We watched and clapped for the winning duck and went home. About an hour later, my family member got a phone call from the rubber ducky herder who told her she had won!! It was pretty funny, she was just there and clapping for herself. I don't think she'll ever live that down. She bought me the barn of course, but I only just recently got around to painting it. It finally came into good use!

Looking back, I really wish I had included my mini rubber ducky in that shoot. Drat. Opportunity lost.

Judging

 Part of the reason I've been so busy, is that I've taken on a new show to judge. It is just the "floater" leftover classes and I'm steadily picking my way through them. :)

The show is the Fall Fling show on OMHPS. It has been in judging for over a year, and the host was feeling overwhelmed. She requested me to clean-up the extras, which I was happy to do.

There have been a lot of very beautiful horses galloping  and strutting their stuff on my laptop screen. :) I included a selection of the winners from the classes I've been working on. Please do not copy these photos. I have watermarked them all, to discourage stealing. These are not my photos. I cannot give you permission to use them. So please, just enjoy looking. :) Thank you.

New Blog Series Coming Soon!

This has been in the works for awhile now. Starting hopefully in the next 2-3 days here, I will be doing a blog series on judging Photo Show classes. I will be dissecting a real Photo Show class from the show I hosted this past summer. The examples will be slightly tailored to OMHPS platform use, but the basic principles can be easily applied to any other sort of photo judging.

The example class will be a small one consisting of 5-10 horses. I would do a larger one, but I prefer to discuss fewer horses more thoroughly than more horses rather sloppily.

During this series,  I highly encourage you to post comments! If you have a question, about something I missed covering, or maybe about something I did cover and you didn't quite fully understand then please ask it in the comments! I promise I don't bite. :) I may answer it directly in the comment section, or I may tackle it in the next post. I'm hoping to space the posts out about 1 post per 2-3 days. It should be a no more than 7 post series, probably closer to 5.

Final Disclaimer: I am not the only person in the world, so that means that my opinion is not going to be the same as everyone else's. My method of judging is not identical to every other judge. Some people may not agree with certain points I make, and that's okay. Judging is a style. If we all had the same style, we would have no need for shows, because we would already know which horse was the best. Please, if you see something you don't agree with, don't be nasty. Post it in the comments if you want, and I will give you my reasoning, but please be respectful.

Update on 2022 Spotted Dreams Photo Show

Quick post today, the pizza is about to come out of the oven. 😅

 

The 2022 Spotted Dreams Photo Show is coming along nicely, with 14 entrants (not including me), and three people whom I'm waiting for payment from. There are 1003 entries in classes. 3 are Creative Halter, 11 are Other Animal, and 989 are Halter. There have only been a couple of glitches, and they were resolved quickly. Show is open until the 30th of June. I'm enjoying hosting, I really appreciate all who have entered/are in the process of entering!
